Chapter 10

To Be Frankley

The evening air was crisp, so instead of walking, Craig and I drove to the Casino. We took my car because he’d left his truck at the docks and walked over before the sun went down.

After a few minutes, the faint glow of the hotel lights in the distance seemed to pull me in like a beacon, but the quiet in the car felt too thick and uncomfortable. Craig’s knuckles gripped the steering wheel a little too tightly, his gaze focused on the road ahead as if he was willing the tension to disappear. Meanwhile, I found myself stewing over the day’s events—Lily’s anger, the frustration with Larson, and the nagging suspicion.

“I can’t believe they pulled Mrs. Pierce out of class like that,” I muttered, breaking the silence. “I mean, what were they thinking?”

Craig exhaled long and tired. “Sarah, I get it. But you can’t keep letting it bug you. Lily’s upset, I get that. But you wanted to make sure her teacher wasn’t involved in a grizzly murder investigation. I would have done the same thing. Don’t worry about it.”

I glanced at him, annoyed. “I’m not ‘dwelling.’ I’m just... frustrated.”

Craig didn’t say anything for a moment, clearly unsure of how to respond. Finally, he glanced at me briefly before looking back at the road. “Look, I get it. I do. But let’s focus on tonight. I need to get this presentation right, and I don’t need any distractions.”

I exhaled sharply. “Fine,” I said, trying to push my frustration aside. “Let’s focus on your conference. You ready to wow them?”

Craig managed a small smile, but his nerves were still obvious as he pulled into the long hotel driveway. The large, elegant building loomed ahead, its lights reflecting off the water in the distance. “Yeah, let’s do this. I’ve only practiced this speech... what, a thousand times?” He tried to laugh it off, but it was clear he was just as uneasy as ever.

After we parked, we walked up the sidewalk to the hotel entrance. I could see most of the building's exterior, it was beautiful. The Triton Hotel & Casino stood gracefully at the edge of Pebble Bay, its grand brick facade adorned with delicate ironwork and elegant arches. The deep burgundy and gold exterior gleamed in the soft evening light, while tall windows offered a glimpse of the surrounding beauty.

I don’t think Craig saw anything I was admiring, he quickly started flipping through his notecards again, murmuring to himself.

“Relax Craig, you’ve got this,” I was trying to reassure him. “Just imagine that instead of talking to a room of strangers, you’re talking to Pete and Brady. Just a bunch of fishermen, hanging out.”

He gave a half-smile, looking at the notecards in his hands like they were a lifeline. “I’m trying. But honestly, I’ve never been so nervous in my life. I can’t even imagine what they’re going to think about all this.”
